On Sunday, August 26, 2012 I became the proud owner (temporarily) of a 1975 Claret Red Plymouth Scamp. After saving his money, researching cars, scouring Craigslist and other used car websites, my 20yr old son, Jameson (Jim to almost everyone who knows him) decided he wanted this Scamp.
It was in Chino and we (Jim, his good friend Dan and me) went to see this treasure. Turns out this was a good buy-it made it all the way to Rancho Bernardo Dr. exit on I15 before it picked up something on the freeway that shredded the right front tire. After a ride in a CHP cruiser and then the tow truck, Jim and the Scamp made it to Discount Tire on Broadway Ave. in El Cajon, Ca. to rest for the night.
The next morning he and his friend Dan hung around the tire store to get 4 new tires, the shredded spare replaced and she was good to go. The car is kinda cute for a 37 yr old car. Straight body and a vinyl top with no rips or scratches or tears. No rust, little things need to be done-but nothing major though!
Jim did good and until he has aged a little more so the insurance doesn't cost as much as his tuition to Humboldt State the car is technically mine.....but that won't be for long. I must say it will be liberating to all involved when Jim has his drivers licence and is even more independent.
Victoria has the Jetta in Fullerton for school, and I have the E150 here in El Cajon for my transportation and now the Scamp. I am happy the kids have their own vehicles so when Christmas rolls around and I and Jim pack up the apartment we can all go to our next step on our own.
